Of all the islands in the Mediterranean, Sicily is the largest, the most fertile, the most populated. Located at the very tip of Italy, towards the west, it forms an arm of the sea called the Strait of Messina, wide, in the northern part, no more than three kilometers; in this channel there are the famous promontories of Cariddi and Scilla: Caridd near the port of Messina, Scilla on the peninsula.
